What Stops You?

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and
give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”
— Michael Jordan

What do you really, really, really want?

If you want something bad enough then find a way or ways to make it happen. It’s really that simple.

If you quit the odds are truly against having what you want.

On the other hand, if you keep trying a way will usually open.

A few years ago I attempted to climb Pikes Peak one of the most challenging 14ers here in Colorado. I failed twice and I didn’t want to experience that physical and mental pain again. When I took an honest look at my attempts it became clear that I was not in good enough physical condition to complete the assent the first times.

To fix the problem I worked with a physical trainer to improve my cardiovascular conditioning and physical strength. I pushed myself each time to do better than the last workout and stay within my prescribed heart rate range, I learned from experience that overdoing it would set me back more than help in my quest.

I also had the support and supplemental training with my friend Gairy.

I really wanted to summit this time.

We summited Pikes Peak at about 1:30 PM, 30 minutes ahead of the 2 PM deal line.

This was the hardest thing I had ever done physically. It wasn’t all about mental will or special tricks. I put a plan together and worked for it. And yes, I didn’t achieve all my training goals or objectives each time. And YES, I achieved the overall training objectives and the major Goal…I summited.

To find out what stops you from having what you really want do this Action Step.

Action Step: Write out your #1 goal and start doing the activities required to achieve it. When you stop working to achieve it notice what stopped you. It could be an emotional limit such as frustration, a physical limit, or resources limit. Each one is treated differently AND be gentle on yourself when you stop. It’s a learning process, not the end of the world.
