Being authentic

“Life isn’t about finding yourself.

Life is about creating yourself.”

— George Bernard Shaw

When I work with clients one of the first things we do is to discover what they really want.

Usually it starts with what I call the American standard, which is a 6 figure income, new house, new car, a successful business, a family that…, and the list goes on.

As we work together, in the first 90 days or so, the client will usually confess that this path is way too hard and that they don’t want to do it anymore.

Eureka! This is where they would usually stop.

Now begins the real conversation about what they really, really, really want.

As we discover what they really want they find themselves and begin to be authentically who they are.

The good news is that they then go on to be more successful than ever before and they’re happier than ever before as well.

So, in essence, they find themselves by knowing what they really want. And they’re also creating themselves along the way as they change their behavior to achieve their goals consistent with their core values, which is also who they are.

To set yourself up to thrive do this Action Step.

Action Step: Ask yourself, “What do I really want?” Then shut up and wait for the answers. Notice if you’re jotting down all the “things you should want.” Keep going until you find things that really get you excited. Circle them. Now you’re on to who you are. Crafting an action plan to achieve your dreams is creating yourself.
